The Central-East electricity REM is led by the Austrian Energy Regulator (E-Control) and aims to integrate Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia into a single regional electricity  market.

While the degree of market development in the region varies from country to country, integration of ‘old’ and ‘new’ EU Member States can act as an example for other areas of EU policy. Congestion management, increased transparency, reducing barriers to  market entry and  developing regulatory competences are the four key priorities of the Central-East
